You heard me. I don't like keeping track of what I've eaten or obsessing about how much of a particular nutrient is in my food. I feel like I'm not the only person in the world who hates slash refuses to count calories. Luckily for those of us out there who hate calorie counting there is another way.
The Paleo or "caveman" diet is based upon the diet our caveman ancestors (if you believe in that sort of thing) would have eaten back in the day. This means everything that a caveman could get his hands on without processing first ie.grains, sugar, milk etc. It states that people were never meant to eat grain because of the gluten and lectin that occurs throughout most grains. Gluten is continuously causing a problem for people and some people argue that it isn't even supposed to be ingested by people. Lectin is a toxin that grains create to prevent from even being eaten. Yup you heard me even the grains even know we aren't supposed to eat them!
BOOM Paleo!
Eat 2-3 bigger meals a day. Avoid snacking just eat more at meal time. A combination of the following.
Beef (Grass fed): Cows aren't supposed to eat grains either, but if your doing the diet strictly for weight loss I have found little to no difference.
Fowl: chicken, hen, turkey, duck anything with wings that can sort of fly.
Fish: Wild fish is going to be better than the farmed ones.
Eggs: I prefer the brown ones, but its your choice.
Oils: Olive oil, avocado oil, and people who live paleo really love coconut oil.
Fruits: Limit these as they can be high in sugar and therefore high in calories.
Nuts: Again high in calories so don't make a bowl of pistachios your dinner
Tubers: Sweet potatoes and yams, the only starches allowed on this diet and . recommended as a post workout food.
Wait...So what can't I eat again
According to the paleo diet this is what you can't eat.
- Dairy
- Grains (not even whole grain)
- Legumes (peanuts included)
- Sugar or fake sugar or honey or stevia
Does this work slash can I lose weight doing this double slash will my strength and endurance increase if I do this?
Yes, yes, and absolutely! This diet will absolutely help you lose weight. Why you ask? Because it removes the majority of the carbohydrates in your diet. When your body does not have have carbohydrates to use as fuel your body creates more ketones which use your fat stores for energy. This process is called ketosis. Not only are you cutting the carbohydrates almost to zero, but your calorie intake will go down drastically as well.
But wait you said I should eat large meals til I'm full. How is my calorie intake going to decrease?
A candy bar has anywhere from 150-200 calories. A giant bowl of broccoli has about 150-200 calories. It is near impossible to eat more calories than your body requires while on the paleo diet. This is also one of the big contributing factors to why you'll lose weight.
Give it 2 weeks.
Try the diet out for just two weeks (most people say 30 days) and you'll see your body fat drop, you strength gains soar, and you'll feel a drastic change in your energy levels.
Our opinion
We believe it is impossible and also unnecessary to cut out all the things we love from our life in the name of health. We believe taking a "cheat" day once a week helps us to stay honest throughout the rest of the week and also allows us to be social and keep our sanity. 6 Days on 1 Day off. That's our recommendation.
Good Luck!
